The Vance Center published the third edition of its Latin America Anti-Corruption Report 2023-2024, in which Guatemala is included.
The study identifies and analyzes the institutional frameworks and efforts undertaken in 18 countries in the region to tackle corruption. And in Guatemala’s case, the results are discouraging.
Guatemala is the third worst-rated country on the continent with a score of 3.46 out of 10, only above Venezuela (2.56) and Nicaragua (1.28). In the Legislation section, the country is rated 5.42. But in relation to Authorities and Implementation, the score drops to 2.56 and 2.58 respectively. The main concerns are the Independence of the Public Prosecutor's Office (2.00), the Coordination between Authorities (1.67) and the Effectiveness of Whistleblower Protections (1.44).
In addition to a regional analysis, the report includes a specific analysis for each country, covering issues such as corruption in the public sector, corruption in the private sector, reporting and protection of whistleblowers, specialized authorities, institutional coordination mechanisms, civil society participation and transparency and access to information.
We invite you to read this interesting report, in which we had the honor of participating. We thank the Vance Center for giving us the opportunity to continue contributing with them.
